The short answer
iPhone saves screenshots to your photo library. Open Photos, go to Collections, tap Media Types, then tap Screenshots to see all of them. If it is not there, check Recently Deleted (recoverable for 30 days) and the Hidden album, and think back to whether the screenshot was saved at all. If it is there but buried among hundreds of others, one word you remember from it is enough with an app that searches the text inside screenshots.
1. Start with the Screenshots album
Apple's own instructions: open Photos, go to Collections, tap Media Types, then tap Screenshots. This album collects every screenshot in time order, whichever app you took it in.
It only sorts by "is this a screenshot", not by what is in it. Receipts, chats and article snippets all end up side by side, and you scan them by eye. If you remember roughly when you took it, jumping to that date is the fastest route.
2. It may never have been saved
Since iOS 26, a new screenshot opens full screen with quick tools such as Markup, crop, send and a save button that lets you choose where on the device to save it. Apple's iPhone User Guide says full-screen screenshots are saved to the photo library when you swipe up or tap the button and choose an option, while screenshots that appear as thumbnails save automatically.
That leaves two common cases:
- You tapped cancel or delete in the preview, so the screenshot was never saved.
- You saved it somewhere other than the photo library, so you need to look in that location.
If you prefer the old behavior, Apple notes that screen capture settings let screenshots appear either full screen or as a temporary thumbnail in the lower-left corner.
3. Check Recently Deleted and Hidden
Deleted photos and videos go to the Recently Deleted album for 30 days, during which you can recover them; after that they are deleted permanently. You will find it under Utilities when you scroll down in Collections. In iOS 16 and later, Face ID or Touch ID is required by default to open the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums.
With iCloud Photos on, deleting on one device deletes on the others signed in to the same Apple Account. If you cleaned up photos on an iPad, the iPhone copies went to Recently Deleted too.
4. It is there, you just cannot spot it
This is the most common case. The screenshot is still in your library, but it is one of hundreds. You remember an order number, a sentence or a shop name in it, not the day you took it.
Whether Photos search matches text inside screenshots is something we could not confirm on Apple's search help page, so we mark it as not verified. Not verified means we did not see a clear statement on the official page, not that the feature does not exist. Try it on your own phone.
ScreenNote is built for exactly this: it reads the text in your screenshots on the phone, then finds them again from the few words you remember.
- Bring old screenshots in. ScreenNote does not pull in your existing screenshots on first launch. On the Now tab, tap Import Screenshots, then Import All Unimported. Anything already imported is skipped. If you only granted access to some photos, you will only see those; allow Full Access in Settings to see every screenshot.
- Let the text recognition finish. Text is read first and becomes searchable as soon as it is done; with AI turned on, summaries follow. Processing runs while the app is open, pauses when you switch away and picks up again when you come back.
- Search for what you remember. Tap Search and type a few words. Search matches the recognized text in the image as well as titles, summaries, tags, key points and the source app, and you can narrow results by source.
After that, new screenshots are picked up when you open the app, with a card asking whether to add them; if there are a lot at once, it points you to the import page to add them in one go. When you are in another app, you can also swipe down on the Home Screen and use Spotlight, as explained in this post.
What it cannot do
- It cannot bring back a screenshot that was permanently deleted from Recently Deleted, or one that was never saved to the library.
- It does not process screenshots while the app is closed; new ones are found the next time you open it.
- If text in an image was not recognized, you cannot search for it. Very small or blurry text may be read only partly.

FAQ
Where are screenshots saved on iPhone?
In your photo library. Open Photos, go to Collections, tap Media Types, then tap Screenshots to see all of them.
Can I recover a deleted screenshot?
Within 30 days, yes. Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days and can be recovered there. After 30 days, or if you delete them from that album, they are gone.
Does ScreenNote import all my old screenshots automatically?
No. It does not go back through existing screenshots on first launch; tap Import Screenshots on the Now tab to add them in one go. New screenshots are offered for import when you open the app.
